Restoration and Repair of Art Glass Windows and Lamps

Our location in Oak Park, Illinois, puts us in the heart of Prairie School architecture. For almost 30 years, Curran Glass Studio has been a major consultant in restoring literally thousands of art glass panels in architectural masterpieces designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and other notablelamp architects. Not only do we have the expertise to understand and execute the best procedure for repairing art glass panels that are broken, buckled, leaking, or loose, but we also stock all the necessary materials so that we can offer our clients prompt attention when it comes to repairs.

The restoration of certain types of windows requires specialized products or techniques:

  • For exclusive use in hard-to-match repairs or the restoration of antique windows, Curran Glass Studio maintains a collection of discontinued sheet glass, some of it nearly 100 years old. We even maintain a collection of clear sheet glass used in windows from the early 1900s. After carefully cleaning this glass, we use it instead of the new so-called "restoration" glass being manufactured today.
  • Curran Glass Studio stocks thousands of cut, cast, and pressed jewels for the more elaborate Victorian-style panels.
  • To replace broken beveled glass pieces in an old window, we create replacement bevels on turn-of-the-century beveling equipment, taking care to use vintage plate glass to better match the subtle tint of the existing surrounding pieces.
  • The repair of church windows often demands expertise in staining and firing. This expertise is available at Curran Glass Studio, where our artisans painstakingly replicate the required designs, then fire the stained pieces in kilns under the optimum heat requirements necessary to achieve proper fusion of the applied stains.
  • For the restoration of bowed or buckled panels, Curran Glass Studio refabricates each leaded panel with a special alloy lead that stiffens the panels and prevents future stretching and sagging once they have been restored.
  • Our inventory of cames covers nearly all the extrusions, profiles, and metals used in the construction of all types of art glass panels, new and old. We even carry lead that looks like tree branches!
  • To keep your restored panels straight and rigid, we don't skimp on applying the necessary rebars. We inventory these, too, in all shapes and sizes, in galvanized metal or brass to resist rusting. top

Duplication and Matching of Original Panels

If your project involves a property that has experienced major remodeling, or a crisis such as fire or theft, Curran Glass Studio can duplicate art glass panels existing elsewhere on the property, or recreate pieces that have been lost or destroyed. We work closely with glass manufacturers to achieve the best possible match for your glass. In most cases a photograph and the required dimensions give us enough information to work up an accurate cost estimate and delivery schedule for you. top
